A LETTER TO TEACHERS
January 2009
Dear Rhode Island Middle and High School English Teachers :

Recognizing that literacy is an incredible challenge facing all Rhode Islanders, the goal of Reading Across Rhode Island is to encourage ALL Rhode Islanders to read the same book and to participate in discussions, activities and public events centered on the book during the early months of 2009. This year’s selection is Five Skies by Ron Carlson. Teachers should read the selection before assigning it for their classroom to determine the appropriateness of the content for his or her specific students.  There are extensive lists of similarly themed books for Young Adult readers in our Resource list which may be substituted if Five Skies is not appropriate for the classroom level.

In order to involve middle and high school students, our education committee has compiled an extensive list of ideas for student responses to this book. Please feel free to email any of your ideas for responses to our website: readingacrossri@provlib.org. –all appropriate responses are encouraged. We ask that you share the following information with your students, and for you to submit any responses you feel demonstrate thought and creativity. You are free to decide the criteria for submission.

All students who submit a response to Five Skies (including the required information form) will receive:
• The chance to win a gift certificate to a local bookstore
• The chance to be published on the Reading Across Rhode Island Web Site
Please note that no response will be published without the written permission of the author.
• The chance to display videos, music, or visual art at the Reading Across Rhode Island May Breakfast on May 9, 2009.

Please return all student responses to:
Reading Across Rhode Island
Providence Public Library
150 Empire Street

Please note: All entries must be postmarked by April 10, 2009.
Each student’s response must include a participant information form.
